Circular patterns of production and consumption. EU Commission with a new action plan for a further step towards a circular economy.
The new action plan “The European Green Deal” is an important part of Europe's new agenda for sustainable growth. The aim is to protect the environment and introduce new rights for consumers, while strengthening the EU's competitiveness. This is to be implemented with the help of circular economy production, in which the resources used remain in the EU economy for as long as possible and do not end up in landfills.
The current economy, which is still largely linear according to the “take-make-waste” principle, must be made more circular in order to preserve our environment and achieve climate neutrality by 2050, according to Frans Timmermans, Executive Vice President for the European Green Deal.
The action plan introduces measures that provide instructions on how products are manufactured and strengthen the position of consumers to become part of the solution:
With Legislation for sustainable product policy The Commission wants to ensure that products are designed in the future so that they have a longer lifespan and can be reused, repaired and recycled more easily. In addition, the proportion of recycled material used should be increased. Consumers should have a “right to repair” by giving them access to information on the repairability and shelf life of products.
The origin of Waste should be avoided as much as possibleby producing high-quality secondary resources from products that are no longer used. In order to combat illegal waste shipments, the export of waste should also be minimized.
In particular, industries with high circular potential, such as the electronics, automotive and batteries, packaging, textiles, construction and food industries, are held accountable.
The EU Commission's action plan for a further step towards a circular economy opens up new opportunities for companies to be competitive in the future and to become part of the solution to protect the environment by providing their business model adjust.
