The aim of ICEBERG is to reduce construction waste and mixed construction waste and to optimize the recycling and utilization of materials in the best possible way.
35 public and private organizations from ten countries of the European Union are taking part in the ICEBERG project — acronym (in English) for”innovative solutions based on a circular economy that demonstrate the efficient recovery of valuable resources from building materials that take into account the “end-of-life” aspect right from the start”.
The project is financed as part of the “Horizon 2020” funding program for research and innovation and has a duration of four years.
The aim is to further develop the circular economy in the construction sector, including with the help of “reverse logistics” tools and production technologies that use valuable recycled materials (with low levels of contamination below 8%). The aim is also to improve the reliability and acceptance of recycled materials from construction waste and mixed construction waste. This is validated on an industrial scale using six case studies at various sites, which include the recyclability of concrete, ceramics, wood, plaster, insulating foams and super-insulating materials.
EPEA will contribute its Cradle to Cradle expertise to the project and lead the circular design of components and the creation of a practical catalog for construction professionals. Part of the project will therefore also include the design and manufacture of new building products that are recyclable, durable and easy to dismantle and contain already defined recycled materials (between 30% and 100%).
