Due to their complex combination of bonded materials, mattresses are one of the main sources of landfill waste worldwide. In collaboration with Royal Auping and DSM-Niaga, we worked on the development of a completely redesigned mattress. The new and modular design makes it possible to separate all components and reuse them in new mattresses.
DSM-Niaga and Royal Auping have developed an alternative manufacturing process for mattresses that enables high quality and hygiene standards and includes a local recycling system. The first mattresses are being tested at Landal GreenParks Resorts.
Geert Doorlag, product developer at Royal Auping, says: “Sustainability has always been important to Royal Auping. As a family company, we focus on the long term. Since 2009, EPEA has been helping us identify the barriers to manufacturing 100% recyclable products. In addition, they have helped us find solutions to overcome these barriers. For the Auping Revive round mattress, EPEA helped us identify the need and find alternative materials. They were also a facilitator for our current partnership with DSM-Niaga.”
