As part of Munich Creative Business Week (MCBW) 2024, Drees & Sommer, together with EPEA GmbH and Münchner Wohnen, presented the installation “Feierabendziegel” on Königsplatz in Munich.
The concept, which prevailed in the competition process, aims to stimulate public discourse on the topic of the circular economy and to turn visitors into brick savers themselves through participation.
The beaver tail tiles used come from a demolition building owned by Münchner Wohnen in the Ramersdorf district. The company Klarwein carried out the non-destructive dismantling of the roof tiles in order to make them usable for installation. EPEA organized the logistics of the materials and supported the program on site, including discussion rounds, assembly and dismantling of the installation, and the delivery of bricks on Königsplatz. These activities raised awareness of the importance of urban mining and the reuse of building materials.
After completing the campaign, Drees & Sommer applied for the German Design Award with the “Feierabendziegel” concept and won in the “Excellent Architecture — Fair and Exhibition” category.
The “Feierabendziegel” installation impressively illustrates how building materials can be given a second life after their original use and promotes public discourse on sustainability and resource conservation. More about McBW pop up 2024
Circular Economy and Urban Mining
”The raw material of the future is no longer underground — it is already in our built environment. With urban mining, we are shaping a resource-efficient and circular future”
Matthias Heinrich, Leading Consultant Team Real Estate, EPEA Part of Drees & Sommer
In the construction and real estate industries, around 50 percent of all raw materials are used and 60 percent of nationwide waste is produced at the same time. A transition to circular construction therefore offers high potential to reduce environmental impacts in all areas and to conserve resources. This is the motivation for Münchner Wohnen to drive change within its own company both on a strategic level and in practice through pilot projects. McBW focuses on an important field of action: promoting urban mining. Based on a holistic life-cycle assessment, the use phase of a building is followed by its dismantling phase. In particular, this involves reusing components.
“In times of supply bottlenecks and increases in construction costs, we must make greater use of what is already there: the treasure trove of resources from our existing buildings. In this way, we contribute to closed loops and make a major contribution to climate protection. ”
